Cold Floors and Draughts: How We Sorted Our Robina Home

Pro-Fit Insulation • May 18, 2026

We moved into our Robina home last year and spent the first few months just settling in and getting the feel of the place. It's a slightly elevated home on stumps in one of the older parts of Robina, close to Bond University and the lake system. The house had been beautifully renovated, but there was one thing that kept niggling: the tiled floors in the living areas and the timber floors in the bedrooms were cold underfoot in the mornings during winter, and there was a persistent draught near the hallway even when all the doors and windows were closed. I figured roof insulation might help, did some research into roof insulation Gold Coast options, and found Pro-Fit Insulation , who quickly pointed out that our real issue might be underneath rather than above.

The home is about 180 square metres over a raised timber floor system, with a crawl space underneath that you can just about get into. It's a 1970s design with a pitched roof, and while it had basic ceiling insulation from a previous renovation, nobody had done anything about the floor. On the Gold Coast we tend to focus on summer heat, but in winter those cold floors and draughts are genuinely miserable, and they also affect cooling efficiency in summer by letting cool air escape through gaps in the floor system.

Discovering the Floor Was the Real Problem

When I explained the cold floors and the draught to Pro-Fit Insulation over the phone, they immediately flagged that underfloor insulation might be the right solution rather than anything additional in the roof space. This kind of targeted diagnostic thinking was what made me trust them. They weren't just trying to sell me the biggest job possible; they were listening to what I was actually experiencing and matching it to the right solution.

Underfloor insulation in a raised floor home works by fitting insulation between the floor joists, which creates a thermal and draught barrier between the living space above and the open air beneath the house. In Queensland we often think of insulation as a summer issue, but uninsulated raised floors lose significant warmth in winter and also allow warm humid air to enter from below in summer, working against air conditioning. In a home on stumps, the floor can account for up to 10 to 15 percent of a home's total heat loss in cooler months.

The team suggested we also look at the ceiling insulation while they were there, partly because the original batts were from the previous renovation and of unknown quality. They handle full home insulation across the Gold Coast including both ceiling and underfloor work, so assessing both at once made sense.

How the Pro-Fit Insulation Team Handled It

We booked an assessment and the Pro-Fit Insulation team arrived exactly when they said they would. One team member went into the crawl space under the house while another had a look at the roof space above. The thorough approach confirmed what I'd suspected: the ceiling insulation was adequate though starting to show its age, and the underfloor space had zero insulation at all.

They also checked for any potential moisture or pest issues in the crawl space while they were down there, which was a useful bonus. Nothing major was found, but it's the kind of proactive thinking that shows experience. The quote covered underfloor insulation throughout the home as a priority job, with an optional ceiling insulation top-up that we chose to include at the same time given the reasonable cost of doing both together.

The team explained what products they were recommending for the underfloor application and why, which helped me understand the difference between bulk insulation and reflective foil for under-floor use. The communication throughout was clear and professional without being condescending.

What They Installed and How It Changed Our Home

Pro-Fit Insulation installed polyester underfloor insulation across the full floor area of the house, fitted snugly between the joists and secured properly so it won't sag or fall over time. The ceiling insulation was also topped up with fresh R3.5 batts in the areas where the existing product had thinned. The job took the better part of two days given the crawl space access constraints, but the crew worked steadily and left everything clean and tidy.

The cold floors are gone. It sounds simple but it's genuinely transformed the morning experience in this house. The tile floors that used to be unpleasant to walk on barefoot in winter are now comfortable, and the draught in the hallway has completely disappeared. Our winter heating costs this year have been noticeably lower than we'd budgeted for based on what we'd experienced in our previous home of similar size.

In summer, the benefit is more subtle but still real. The cool air we generate with the aircon stays in the living areas rather than dropping through gaps in the floor system, which means the house reaches the set temperature faster and holds it longer. It's energy efficiency working exactly the way it should.

What I Wish I'd Known Before Moving In

If you're buying or have recently bought an older raised floor home on the Gold Coast, get the underfloor space assessed as part of your due diligence. It's the kind of thing that doesn't come up in building inspections unless you specifically ask, and it makes a significant difference to everyday comfort in both summer and winter.

Pro-Fit Insulation are genuinely the right team for this kind of work across the Gold Coast region. They bring the same professional approach to underfloor jobs as they do to ceiling and roof work, and their knowledge of South East Queensland's specific climate needs means you get a recommendation that actually suits your home. If you're in Robina, Merrimac, Nerang, or the broader southern Gold Coast area and your home is on stumps, contact the roof insulation Gold Coast and underfloor experts at Pro-Fit Insulation for an assessment. It might be the most comfortable decision you make this year.
